WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is often referred to as the sister science of yoga. It is a holistic health system which originated in India and has been practiced for thousands of years. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain an optimal healthy balance in the mind and body, according to each individual’s unique constitution, or inherent nature. The word Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words: “Ayu” meaning “life” and “Veda” meaning “knowledge”.

Ayurveda focuses on living according to the cycles of nature, and suggests that health can be maintained by following certain daily and seasonal routines. These routines are different for different types of people, and by observing a person’s nature it is possible to also determine their optimal diet, leisure activities, exercise routine, self care routine, and surrounding environment.

On a high level, Ayurveda classifies people based on the set of characteristics that is most prominent in their body and mind. There are three classifications, or “doshas”, which are vata, pitta, and kapha. Each person is born with aspects of each of these doshas, but there is always one dosha that is stronger than the others. The state of the doshas in the body is constantly changing and when there is an imbalance, disease will occur. It is the goal of Ayurveda to maintain the natural balance of each person, thus treating their specific imbalances on a case by case basis.

Ayurveda is largely nutrition-based, using many natural recipes and remedies to adjust different states in the body and mind.

Ayurvedic Consultations

In an Ayurvedic consultation, you will first answer a series of questions to determine your inherent nature, or “prakruti”. You will need to answer questions about your physical attributes, lifestyle preferences, digestion, elimination, sleep, and overall health. This will determine your optimal natural state, and begin to identify any current imbalances that you may be experiencing.

From this point, Julie will begin creating a road map detailing how to work towards optimal health. This is a continuous journey, which begins by addressing current imbalances before moving on to more broad lifestyle adjustments.
